I just reread Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster tonight, and I was reminded how much I love that book.
I’m too exhausted to write a personal story about just how much that is, so I’ll leave you with a few memorable quotes, and perhaps you’ll pick it up soon. Really, it only takes about two hours, and I’m not that fast at reading.
In reference to my picture: “[E]very time you decide something without having a good reason, you jump to Conclusions whether you like it or not… it really does look much better from a distance.”
In the valley of sound: “You must decide what a sound looks like, for each sound has its own exact shape and size… we weave [music] on our looms. Symphonies are are the large beautiful carpets with all the rhythms and melodies woven in. Concertos are these tapestries… we also have songs that you often sing, these brightly colored handkerchiefs.”
In the forest of sight: “What [are all the muscians] playing? asked Tock… “The sunset of course. They play it every evening about this time.”
Read it. Now.
